Salute to Iowa Nurses: Iowa hospitals work to foster diversity, equity and inclusion in nursing
Laura Rowley
The COVID-19 pandemic underscored health care inequities, with people from racial and ethnic minority groups facing an increased risk of getting sick and dying from the virus, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
For hospitals, the events of the past year have emphasized the urgency of developing a diverse, culturally competent workforce to help reduce health care disparities and improve patient outcomes.
“The pandemic ripped off the band-aid of long-festering wounds of inequity, some of which have been caused by mistrust of health care systems in part due to historical trauma,” noted Jacqueline Easley, director of community services & diversity services, MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center. “Diversity is essential to helping our staff to provide culturally appropriate care for Iowa’s changing demographics.”
