The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) has announced the formation of a three-year partnership with Richmond Region Tourism for three spring championships to be held at area colleges starting in 2022.
The Richmond region will have two schools host three championships on varying weekends. Virginia State will host women’s tennis along with indoor and outdoor track and field. Virginia Union will be the host university for softball at RF&P Park in Henrico County.
“The CIAA looks forward to bringing some of the country’s premier sports championships to the Richmond region and within proximity to our member institutions,” CIAA Commissioner Jacqie McWilliams said in a press release Monday.

There will be no CIAA menâs or womenâs basketball this winter.
Nor will there be any womenâs volleyball.
The CIAA Board of Directors has voted to cancel the seasons because of fears related to COVID-19.
Basketball season was to begin Jan. 9, with an abbrevi- ated schedule and postseason tournaments in Baltimore.
Womenâs volleyball already had been moved from the fall to winter because of the pandemic.
âUnfortunately, COVID-19 continues to challenge the conferenceâs ability to see a clear path to move forward collectively,â CIAA Commis- sioner Jacqie McWilliams said in a statement. âThe impact to health and wellness, community concerns, as well as the economic ramifications, are real.â
