Sleepy Eye FFA members compete at Region contest

Submitted Sleepy Eye FFA chapter members competed in two Career Development Events (CDEs) for the Region VI Virtual Contests on Jan. 13 and 14. The Fish and Wildlife competitors included: Abigail Hornsby, Jacob Schultz, Jake Price, and Wyatt Barnes. The Fish & Wildlife contest consists of three parts: identification (mammals, fish, birds, insects, reptiles/amphibians), a knowledge test, and a current events activity on species of special concern. Abi Hornsby was the top scorer on the team and was the 15th place individual overall. The team placed 7th and qualified for state. For the Vet Science CDE, Miah Brown, Syarrah Timms, Macey Ludewig, and Sam Timms competed. The Vet Science team members were tested on their knowledge of common pets, pet health, vet science terms and skills, and animal anatomy. An identification of different species including: dogs, cats, birds, fish, rabbits, and other animals kept as pets is also a large part of the contest. Miah Brown was the top scorer on

All three competed in the North Dakota American Legion East Regional Oratorical Contest. A Rugby High School freshman traveled to Park River Jan. 16 to compete against two top speakers in the North Dakota American Legion Oratorical Contest. Haley Mayer, daughter of Scott and Tami Mayer of Rugby, competed against a sophomore and a senior from Wyndmere and Fargo in the eastern regional round of the contest. The winner of regionals, Jacob Schultz of Fargo, will face west region winner Ellie Schmitz of Watford City. Jack Manstrom of Wyndmere also competed against Mayer in the east region, placing second.

Bernice Nees MARQUETTE, MI – Bernice J. Nees, age 77, of Chocolay Township, entered eternal life Tuesday, December 8, 2020, at UP Health System – Marquette. Born August 23, 1943, in Midland, Michigan, a daughter of Leslie and Irene (LaBelle) Croschere, Bernice was the third oldest child in the family and was raised in Marquette. She attended grade school and high school at Bishop Baraga, graduating in 1961. Bernice began her working career at the Northland Hotel and also enrolled at Northern Michigan University. In 1965, she met her future husband, Fred Nees, at the Roosevelt Inn and it was love at first sight. Bernice was a good dancer and that especially captured Fred’s attention. Fred was serving in the military at the time and couldn’t take his eyes off of her. They began dating, got engaged, and on May 7, 1966 were married at St. Christopher Catholic Church. In the following years, 1967 and 1968, two wonderful daughters were born. Following Fred’s honorable military
