uninhabitable for weeks or months. it s remarkable. when you look at that you look at that satellite picture and you can see the upper left quadrant of the eye wall, dangerous energy that that particular part of the storm and it just hugs the coast there with all of that energy, for the latest from the hurricane s path, let s go to jacksonville, all the up the east coast, rosa flores, we re looking at the pictures as the satellite imagery is frightening for how powerful the storm is. 120-miles-per-hour winds, 213,000 people in florida without power. what are you seeing where you are? reporter: you know, you mentioned this hurricane is now a category three, but the latest that we ve got from the city here is they re expecting it to hit as a category four here in jacksonvil jacks jacksonville, and in fact they ve practically closed down the airport.
but we do know because we talked to them a couple of people who have said, we are staying put, they are not far from the beach. they feel confident and comfortable they re just going to ride this storm out. they ve boarded up, they are concerned about their businesses, their homes, and they are not going to leave. so far, they should be okay. we don t know exactly how close this storm is going to get though, and whether it s going to wobble one way or the other so authorities have been pretty clear and saying we really wish that everyone would have evacuated but we know that doesn t happen with any storm. really, okay, sar-a thank you for that. be careful. for the latest on hurricane matthew, let bring in derek van dam in the cnn weather center. two big questions here when, and where? that s what everyone wants to know, derek. yeah, we think from brevard county northward into daytona beach and jacksonville, that s when we re going to see through the morning and into the afternoon a
with it so that s what we call storm surge and this is seven to 11 feet above normal high tide values so that begs to question will we see high tide coincide with the strongest part of the storm? we ve got good news here for the melbourne region, because we re heading towards low tide this morning, and the peak of the storm really only a couple hours away for that area, so we ll coincide the peak storm with the low tide so that means storm surge not as big of a threat for the region but moving up the coast towards jacksonville, we re starting to work our way into high tide by the afternoon and that s when the bulk of the storm will move in. back to you. wow, it is all timing, derek van dam, thank you, we ll be watching carefully. the fury of hurricane matthew being seen in its full effect. this is west palm beach florida as the wind hits that and here s miami, spared by this storm but northern florida is in its path. we ll have more soon.
