WHL Roundup: Kelowna Rockets snap three-game losing skid with 2-1 win over Cougars

KAMLOOPS, B.C. - Cole Schwebius turned aside 30-of-31 shots to lead the Kelowna Rockets past the Prince George Cougars 2-1 in the Western Hockey League on Sunday evening.
Alex Swetlikoff scored at 9:24 of the first period and David Kope added a second at 13:15 to put Kelowna in front 2-0.
Trevor Wong assisted both goals for the Rockets (9-4-1), which snapped a three-game losing skid.
Majid Kaddoura scored the lone goal in the third period for the Cougars (9-9-3), which have dropped two in a row since winning three straight.
Late Davidson goal gives Thunderbirds a 5-4 win

Jared Davidson scored an unassisted goal with 1:52 left in regulation, giving the Seattle Thunderbirds a 5-4 win over the Portland Winterhawks at the ShoWare Center in Kent, Washington. It snapped a 6-game losing streak for Seattle, and the Thunderbirds in the last matchup of the season between the teams salvaged a 2-5 record in the season series.
Why the Thunderbirds won: Their two top veterans, Keltie Jeri-Leon and Henrik Rybinski, had big games in what might have been their final matchup with the Winterhawks. Rybinski had 3 assists having a strong game as a playmaker, and Jeri-Leon had 2 assists and the final tying goal in the 2nd period.

Winterhawks survive early goal, beat Thunderbirds 4-1: The Portland Winterhawks gave up a goal 22 seconds into the game, but came back with 4 goals in the game’s last 31 minutes, beating the Seattle Thunderbirds 4-1 Sunday night at Memorial Coliseum.
Why the Winterhawks won: Linemates Simon Knak and Gabe Klassen, heavily supported by third linemate Reece Newkirk. Knak set up Klassen for the Winterhawks’ tying goal in the 2nd period, then won a board battle leading to Newkirk setting up Klassen for the game-winner. He then scored an insurance goal with a good individual effort in the 3rd.

Two major positives for the Portland Winterhawks Saturday night: Seth Jarvis finally getting some reward for effort, and the power play breaking out. Jarvis had a hat trick against the Seattle Thunderbirds in a season where his puck luck hasn’t always been there. Two of those goals were on the power play, boosting the numbers of a unit that surprisingly has been near the bottom of the league. The win put them three points ahead of Seattle for 2nd place in the WHL’s US Division, and another win in the Sunday rematch would put them in the driver’s seat for finishing 2nd.
