Miller Director of Civic Engagement To Focus On History, Public Service, a
nd the State Of Maryland
ANNAPOLIS, MD Governor Larry Hogan today announced that he will be providing $1 million to Washington College in his forthcoming Fiscal Year 2023 budget proposal to fund a new directorship within the Starr Center for the Study of the American Experience to honor the historic legacy of longtime Maryland Senate President Thomas V. “Mike” Miller, Jr., who passed away in January of this year.
The Miller Director of Civic Engagement will oversee programs that utilize history to address contemporary challenges and involve Washington College students in projects that imbue them with a sense of civic responsibility toward their communities, state, and nation. The director will teach interdisciplinary courses at the college, in addition to running extracurricular programs.
ELKTON â Saying another year is needed for the health of the turf, organizers have once again canceled the Fair Hill Races, which would have taken place Memorial Day Weekend.
âThe turf needs a little more time to mature, which is pretty standard in the world of track racing,â said Chris Daley, speaking on behalf of Fair Hill.
He pointed out that in 1928 when William du Pont Jr. constructed the grass track, he waited six years before racing began. Todayâs technology doesnât need that much time, Daley added.
âThe new turf is looking good and growing,â he said.
Last year, the races were another victim of the global pandemic. In May 2020, the vaccines were months away and too much was still unknown about the novel coronavirus. However because of the ebb and flow of infection rates, Daley said trying to schedule an event the size of the Fair Hill Races is still problematic because the audience would be in grandstand seating, like most other sporting
