Push on to change building codes for aging high-rises

Push on to change building codes for aging high-rises Published: June 30, 2021 6:21 PM EDT Updated: June 30, 2021 6:23 PM EDT Recommended There’s a push on to change building codes for aging high-rises after the Surfside tragedy. The partial collapse of the 40-year-old condo tower on the East Coast is raising questions for our leaders about high-rise design and what needs to happen to ensure the buildings stay safe over time. Miami-Dade and Broward counties are the only counties in the state that require aging high-rises to go through recertification after reaching 40 years. In Lee County, inspections are done upon completion of construction, but so far, there’s no requirement for aging buildings. It’s up to the owners, HOA, or the residents to speak up if they see something concerning.

Investigators say former child welfare worker falsified records

Investigators say former child welfare worker falsified records Published: June 30, 2021 6:39 PM EDT Updated: June 30, 2021 10:57 PM EDT Recommended A worker employed to ensure children are taken care of faces felony charges for falsifying records, investigators say. The former Lutheran Services Florida employee said homes were safe and parents were taking proper care of their kids when she didn’t even show up to check. For half a year, Nicole Scarpaci was required to see every child under her supervision face to face, required to see them inside their own home at least once a month. Instead, she never showed up and never checked on those kids, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement said. She made up the details and stories to make it appear she was making sure those kids were safe, according to investigators.
