Resident Sarah Davis said she was excited to see native grasses included in the plans.  Candace Faith asked if existing porches would be accepted as is or if they d have to adhere to the zoning regulations. Any existing buildings or structures that exist at the time of the adoption of the new district will be considered legally nonconforming, Wells said. If all you are doing is your normal maintenance, typical type of investment into your home, that is not knocking it down and rebuilding it completely, then you do not need to comply with the new porch standards or any of the new standards.

Anonymous donor gives $4 million to Springfield environmental groups

An anonymous donor gave $4 million to the Community Foundation of the Ozarks to strengthen the long-term stability of four Springfield-based environmental groups that promote outdoor recreation and preserve land and water resources for residents across the region. The donation was announced Thursday  on Earth Day  at the Watershed Center at Valley Water Mill Park. Leaders from each of the organizations gathered at the event to celebrate the endowments, made possible through a generous donor who does not wish to be identified, a CFO release said.  The donation established significant endowments for the James River Basin Partnership, Ozark Greenways, TrailSpring and the Watershed Committee of the Ozarks. These endowments will provide annual income for each organization while maintaining and increasing the principal, or corpus, amount for these organizations forever.

Editor: Thank you, News-Leader subscribers, after a strange 2020

It feels presumptuous to type the words, but by the time you read this, 2020 will be in the rearview. It would be an understatement to say the year just past was extraordinary. Between the pandemic and politics, 2020 presented challenges that the Ozarks and the rest of the nation have not experienced in recent memory. Much of that adversity remains, even as we hang new calendars (and burn the old ones .). Before turning that page, however, I want to say one thing: thank you. Thank you to our readers, both regular and occasional, but especially those who subscribe to the News-Leader in print or online. Your support and your decision to spend your own hard-earned dollars to fund trustworthy journalism in southwest Missouri  allows us to do what we do. Thank you for caring about your community and staying informed.
