Medford tenants form union, demand improvements at Fells West buildings

Busted appliances, broken floors, no hot water. Mary Stathos and many of her neighbors in Medford are frustrated with their landlord, Alpha Management Corporation, so they’re forming a tenants union and demanding improvements.
“I went four months without a refrigerator and the linoleum in my kitchen was rotted away, exposing a rotted subfloor and beams, Stathos said. My maintenance requests went unanswered for months.”
Stathos, who works as a clinical therapist, lives at 53 Fellsway West, an apartment building owned by Anwar Faisal, of Alpha Management Corporation.

A snow-laden awning collapsed in Medford Square Friday morning and one person was taken to the hospital for treatment of undisclosed injuries, officials said.
The incident took place just before 9 a.m. at 32 Riverside Ave. The person who was injured was in stable condition, Jackie Piques, a city spokeswoman, said late Friday afternoon.
Public works crews, building inspectors and emergency workers responded to the scene, she said.
