Key to gaining control over African swine fever (ASF) is the development of an effective vaccine against the disease, according to Lucilla Steinaa of the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) of Nairobi. Testing of 10 vaccine candidates has just begun, reports China-based news agency, Xinhua. Efficacy will be evaluated against the virus genotype circulating in central and eastern Africa. At the end of last year, ILRI announced that it had used cutting-edge technology to accelerate the development of ASF vaccines.
