Meet the Photographers Capturing Red Bull Magnitude

When those defined lines of long-period energy come marching out of the North Pacific toward these famed volcanic gems, the true energy and ferocity of these waves can’t be captured from the beach. The action is best documented from out in the channel, often yards or mere feet from where massive chunks of sea realize their full potential, topping over themselves in nature’s display of beautiful blue violence. Being that close to the beast is perilous to say the least. A photographer must be equal parts artist, technician and athlete. We interviewed a few of these photographers down on “the Rock” via email about the heroics behind the lens. Photo: Mike Latronic Dashel Pierson Link copied to clipboard Good news and bad news. First, the bad: the COVID-19 pandemic has toppled the traditional competitive season in Hawaii this winter. And the good? A seemingly endless run of swell has kept the Hawaiian Islands cranking for weeks on end. And the bad news isn’t really that bad, because, despite these unprecedented times and the lack of a “normal” winter, many events have pivoted into something special and fresh, and some new ones have cropped up, too. Like the Red Bull Magnitude event – an all-women, all-digital big-wave competition offering a prize purse of $40,000 for the top charging waterwomen in Hawaii during the course of the winter.

Jackie Fiero and Christa Funk both have it. “It’s similar to surfing in that sense where you’re in the spot for a wave or you’re not in the spot for a wave, or you wipe out or you don’t,” Funk said. Funk and Fiero are among a handful of female professional surf photographers from Hawaii Red Bull hired to document Hawaii’s big winter surf.
