In the mid-1970s, there were strong rumblings that U.S. Steel was considering putting a steel mill in Conneaut. Each day the rumors grew stronger.
At that time, U.S. Steel president and CEO Edgar Speer had his sights set on Conneaut because of the Pittsburgh and Conneaut Dock Co. being located here and because there were acres and acres of eastside land available.
Speer actually visited Conneaut for a public community meeting to discuss his thoughts on the project. Many officials from the county came to that session along with then-Gov. James Rhodes.
Most of Conneaut was enthusiastic for the steel mill but there many others who were against it. Environmental folks were highly concerned about the peaceful town being disrupted by such a project. At many public meetings the atmosphere turned brutally harsh because of the emotional feelings by both sides.
