Humour has an important role to play in effective advertising, but don’t just ‘do a funny ad’, warns Jack Miles – put some serious thought into it.
Marketing effectiveness. Value creation. Serious stuff, isn’t it? Some might say neither of these are a laughing matter. But ‘some’ are wrong. Why? Because there s evidence that using humour in marketing is a value creation opportunity.
And no, I’m not joking. And given we’ve recently exited April – National Humour Month – it feels appropriate to discuss this.

Much of the work on humour in marketing focuses on humour in advertising. And it’s easy to understand why. Effective advertising is noticeable and memorable. Even better, it ll form a connection between brand and consumer. Humour has a role in this.

A new music festival is heading to Merseyside this summer with two huge days of live performances.
The One in the Woods will take place in Orrell Hill Woods, just 20 minutes outside
Liverpool, this July, with a range of artists taking to three different stages across two days.
The festival will feature everything from techno and house to drum and bass music.
Among those performing at the 5,000 capacity site are American DJ Jeff Mills, Austrian duo Camo & Krooked and many more.

Kimo Kirvy, 15 and Jack Miles, 16, were walking home with friends Shannon Wheatley, Michael O Brien and Alfie Stringer when they saw the fire in a house in Clarkfield. After alerting the emergency services, Kimo and Jack rushed to the burning house where the owner was screaming about her pet kitten and chinchilla which were still inside.
