“My days usually start around 3 or 4am and never stop before 5.30pm, sometimes 6.30pm,” Malin said. “I love farming, I love the animal side of it. Making all the cows happy, making sure they are all safe. “My favourite cow is number 699, she always comes for a nice scratch and a pat in the morning.”

Jack Malin takes care of 800 cows in a dairy farm in the Wairau Valley. The Gateway Programme is Government-funded, giving students the opportunity to try their hand at something that could one day be a career. “I really recommend this programme, it is a good way to meet new people . It is definitely well worth the opportunity,” Malin said.
