Allegheny County Executive Defends Decision To Veto Paid Sick Days Bill

Sarah Kovash / 90.5 WESA Although he voiced strong support for the idea of paid sick leave, Fitzgerald said that legally the county’s board of health – not county council – is responsible for developing such health-related policies. “This issue is too important to our community, and particularly to those workers who would have protection in the form of paid sick leave, for it to be done the wrong way,” the Democrat wrote in a letter to council. “It’s simply not fair to give employees in our county false hope that they’re protected when the process followed by council jeopardizes that,” the letter said. “If we want to protect our residents, families, community and public health, we must do this in the right way to ensure that it withstands any legal challenge.”

Washington adds five vacant houses to demo list

The city of Washington added five properties to its demolition list following a virtual public hearing Thursday afternoon. The city’s code enforcement officer, Jeffery Donatelli, said during the hearing that each of the properties were vacant and had accumulated numerous and significant violations of the international property maintenance code. The first, at 212 Linn Ave., has 13 violations and is an “unsafe structure,” with a collapsed porch and deck, roof problems, broken windows and an accumulation of garbage around it, Donatelli said. “I went out there to visit it several times,” Donatelli said. “Every time it’s a little bit worse. It’s very difficult to even get in or out of the property as it stands.”
