Humanity has changed a lot since it first sprung over 200,000 years ago, but one thing that has stayed constant throughout all civilizations throughout time is music. Even though most people enjoy listening to music, about only 25% of the population has played an instrument in the previous year, according to a 2018 study done by Statista.
Everyone should learn to play a musical instrument because playing music is good for brain health, and practicing creates a good work ethic.
Playing a musical instrument is stimulating to the brain. Based on a study done by Loyola University Chicago and the University of Illinois in Chicago, certain diseases like dementia are less common in people that regularly practice a musical instrument. “Few cognitive activities are as demanding of the mind over such long periods,” the researchers said. This discovery shows that playing a musical instrument might have higher benefits to brain health than other cognitive activities.

DeKALB – Derek Chauvin was recently convicted on three counts and sentenced to up to 40 years in prison for the murder of George Floyd, and many Black Americans are feeling relieved and hopeful for the future.
“I certainly believe that justice has been served,” said Jaylan Peebles, president of NIU’s Black Student Union. “It is a huge step in the right direction, but this can not be an end-all, be-all. We still have a long way to go.”
On May 25, 2020, former Minneapolis Police Officer Chauvin and three others arrested Floyd under the pretense of using a counterfeit $20 bill. Chauvin proceeded to kneel on Floyd’s neck for over 9 minutes as Floyd yelled, “I can’t breathe,” and ended up losing his life in the process. A video filmed by a bystander brought the case to national light.
