Gallery 120 is featuring the wok of artist J. Michael Simpson's in an exhibition of paintings and drawings entitled "Moving in Place Again". The work explores the surface undulations of a nearby white-water river. Each work uses multiple images of the imperceptible riff and broil of a nearby river. These stop-action images were gleaned from one to two seconds video of the flow of the river and painted or drawn with acrylic and oil on canvas. The GPS and time stamp data noting when or where a work was video recorded is included in the titles or silkscreened on to the surface of the work:
Rock Hill SC artist J. Michael Simpson presents paintings, graphite drawings and video graphics which transcribe the hydrologic drama of a moment of river turbulence. The exhibit opens March 18, 2022 and continues through April 29, 2022. The Caldwell Arts Council is open Tuesday-Friday 9am-5pm.
