WASHINGTON, April 30, 2021 /PRNewswire/ NASA s Ingenuity Mars Helicopter has a new mission. Having proven that powered, controlled flight is possible on the Red Planet, the Ingenuity experiment will soon embark on a new operations demonstration phase, exploring how aerial scouting and other functions could benefit future exploration of Mars and other worlds.
This new phase will begin after the helicopter completes its next two flights. The decision to add an operations demonstration is a result of the Perseverance rover being ahead of schedule with the thorough checkout of all vehicle systems since its Feb 18 landing, and its science team choosing a nearby patch of crater bed for its first detailed explorations. WASHINGTON, April 28, 2021 /PRNewswire/ NASA s Ingenuity Mars Helicopter team will discuss plans for the rotorcraft s remaining flight campaign during a virtual media briefing at 12:30 p.m. EDT (9:30 a.m. PDT) Friday, April 30. The helicopter has flown successfully three times and completed its mission objectives, and engineers at NASA s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California aim to push the limits of what this experiment can do.

The Ingenuity helicopter had risen to every challenge it faced on Mars so far, and now it s confronting a new one. But the little chopper will live to fly another day specifically on Friday.
Ingenuity was supposed to lift off Thursday for a flight that pushed it further, faster and longer than before. However, the flight didn t happen as planned. The helicopter s team reported that Ingenuity remains safe and in good condition.
