‘Workers ready for any sacrifice to save the steel plant’
The relay hunger strike being observed by workers of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP), under the aegis of the Visakha Ukku Parirakshana Porata Committee, continued for the 102nd day at the Steel Plant arch at Kurmannapalem here on Monday.
Addressing the gathering, Porata Committee chairman Mantri Rajasekhar said that the struggle to save the steel plant would be continued till the Union government withdrew its decision to privatise VSP.
Committee convener J. Ayodhya Ram said that the steel workers, who were contributing their mite to achieving production, overcoming the pandemic situation, would not tolerate if their patience was tested by the Centre.
Fire engulfed the tent which was set up with thatched leaves. Fire tenders that rushed to the spot brought the fire under control. A case has been registered and the investigation is on.

The relay hunger strike, being observed by the workers of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP), under the aegis of Visakha Ukku Parirakshana Porata Committee, opposing privatisation of VSP continued for the 99th day at the Steel Plant arch at Kurmannapalem, here, on Friday.
The committee leaders from MMSM, STM and SBM departments and workers participated in the relay hunger strike. Porata Committee chairman D. Adinarayana welcomed the unanimous resolution adopted in the Assembly against the decision of the Centre to privatise the VSP. He sought that the Centre should revoke its decision at least now and honour the resolution against the privatisation. The relay hunger strikes launched by the Visakha Ukku Parirakshana Porata Committee in protest against the privatisation of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant(VSP) entered the 80th day on Sunday.
Union representatives from LMMM, WRM, RS&RS departments participated in the strike.
Addressing the gathering, committee convener J. Ayodhya Ram alleged that the ‘mindless decisions’ of the Centre, at a time when the nation was reeling under the coronavirus pandemic, was causing untold hardships to the people.
‘Hand it over to the steel plant for production of oxygen’
Steel Plant Employees Union, an affiliate of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions( CITU), has demanded that the Centre take over the oxygen plant set up by Air Liquid India Holding Private Limited of France on the premises of RINL-Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP) and hand it over to the VSP for production of oxygen.
In a letter to Steel Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Monday, CITU State president Ch. Narasinga Rao, honorary president B. Ganga Rao, president J. Ayodhya Ram and general secretary Y.T. Das noted that the then Union government in 2009 had allowed the French company to set up a plant to produce oxygen and nitrogen in the VSP.
