The media is often referred to as the "fourth estate" of the realm due to its role in providing citizens with information to hold the government accountable and to offer solutions to societal problems. In Nigeria, the media has been relentlessly attacked by the Nigerian government and its security agencies, who are uncomfortable with the media's reports exposing corruption and holding authorities accountable for their atrocities.
May 3rd is designated as World Press Freedom Day; however, despite this, press freedom remains unchanged, with an increase in arbitrary arrests and imprisonments of journalists, sacrificing their duty. Many journalists have been killed, while others have disappeared without a trace. Journalism is one of the pillars that strengthen democracy and also serves as a watchdog for both private and government sectors worldwide.
