Last Sunday, the pool at West Wight Sports and Community Centre (WWSCC) in Freshwater was asplash with people swimming 100 laps, to qualify for the Solent Swim on Sunday, July 4. Among the swimmers this year is Britta Aggar, a popular West Wight cabbie, who will be celebrating her marriage a couple of days earlier. “I am a first-timer,” said German-born Britta. “It’s going to be an unforgettable week – I am also marrying my partner, Andy Cotton.” Britta’s training has combined pool swimming, boot camp and running – up to nine times a week. Britta is raising money for Mountbatten as well as WWSCC.
Entries are now open for the Solent Swim 2021, on July 4. You could be among the swimmers crossing 1.3 miles from Hurst Castle, near Lymington, to Colwell Bay. The swim, in its 11th year, is organised by West Wight Sports and Community Centre. Anyone over 18 can take part, if they complete a timed swim beforehand. Each person raises at least £250 for the centre. The event has raised a total of more than £250,000 for the centre over the years, thanks to 544 swimmers. Proceeds over £250 can be split 50:50 with another charity of the swimmer’s choice. More than 30 charities have benefitted in this way.
