REPRESENTATIVE Ivan A. Blanco, the House Republican leader, passed away Friday afternoon. He was 45.
Blanco attended a Developmental Disabilities Council meeting at the Aqua Resort Friday morning. Variety was told that  after lunchtime, the Precinct 3 lawmaker suddenly felt weak, and then became unresponsive. He was rushed to the Commonwealth Health Center where he was pronounced dead at past 1:30 p.m.
One of Blanco s colleagues in the House, Rep. Angel Demapan, described him as âbeloved  by everyone.â
âHis death is big loss to the  Commonwealth He was an honorable statesman, a very loving father and a very devoted husband.â
Demapan added, âI just ask that we keep his family and his soul in our prayers during this very difficult time.â
PALAU, at least two Caribbean islands, and several U.S. states and territories â including the CNMI â have banned certain types of sunscreen âdue to the damaging toll chemicals take on the environment,â as Brad Lenahan would put it in an online article.
In the CNMI, Public Law 21-20 was signed by Gov. Ralph DLG Torres on April 3, 2020 to âban the importation of sunscreens that contain oxybenzone, or BP-3, and octinoxate.â
Rep. Ivan A. Blanco authored the bill that became P.L. 21-20.
According to the CNMI Division of Fish and Wildlife, which supported the bill, research âhas shown that both oxybenzone and octinoxate are highly toxic chemicals that kill juvenile coral. These chemicals are also blamed for increasing coral bleaching â making them vulnerable to stress even at temperatures below 87.8°F â and cause genetic damage to coral and other marine organisms.â
THE NMI Democratic bloc and their Independent allies assumed the leadership of the 22nd House of Representatives on Tuesday after Independent Rep. Edmund Villagomez was elected speaker by a vote
