Israeli military says 81 percent of soldiers vaccinated or recovered from COVID

The military did not provide a breakdown of how many soldiers had been vaccinated and how many recovered. Recovering from the illness is thought to provide strong protection against the virus. The discovery last month that two Israelis who had recovered from the illness had been reinfected by the new South African strain has led to discussions about whether recovered patients should also be vaccinated.  Prof. Alon Galzberg, the army’s surgeon-general, said the IDF is “the first army in the world to achieve herd immunity in confronting the coronavirus pandemic.” In a briefing to reporters, he said: “We taught the paramedics to carry out the mission. We succeeded in using all the vaccines that we received from the civilian health care system.”

81% of IDF soldiers vaccinated or recovered from COVID, army says

81% of IDF soldiers vaccinated or recovered from COVID, army says Yoav Zitun | Published: 03.11.21 , 12:22 The IDF announced Thursday that 81% of its soldiers are at least a week away from their second vaccine dose or have recovered from coronavirus. The IDF has become the first military in the world to reach herd immunity, said Maj. Gen. Itzik Turgeman, the head of the military’s Technology and Logistics Directorate. Some 8% of IDF soldiers are still classified as vaccine refusers due to several reasons, including worries over side effects or female soldiers who are in the first trimester of their pregnancy. The army estimated that thousands of additional soldiers will be vaccinated in the coming weeks.
