Just days after a 7.7 magnitude earthquake hit the South Pacific, a shallow 6.2-magnitude quake struck off Vanuatu s capital Port Vila.
There was no tsunami warning sounded. The quake reportedly occurred west of
Port Vila at a depth of 10 kilometres.

The quake was followed by tremors with magnitudes ranging from 5.7 to 6.1 which was recorded in Vanuatu as well with high tides reported in several places.

WELLINGTON/SYDNEY, Feb 11 (Reuters) - A powerful 7.7 magnitude undersea earthquake struck the South Pacific on Thursday, triggering tsunami warnings in the region that were later cancelled, with no immediate reports of damage.
The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said the quake s epicentre was 417 km (258 miles) east of Tadine, a town in the French territory of New Caledonia, and at a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles).

The main tsunami waves have now passed all expected Lord Howe Island locations. Small unusual waves may continue, but Tsunami Warnings for Lord Howe Island have been cancelled. The earthquake caused Norfolk Island to be struck by small tidal waves and briefly triggered underwater warnings for Lord Howe Island, 700km off the New South Wales coast.

The earthquake took place off New Caledonia s coast, sending ripples through the Tasman Sea. The Joint Australian Tsunami Alert Center for Lord Howe Island released alerts immediately, advising people to keep clear of the beaches.
