look, if you were going to map out a scenario for things going poorly, this is it. right? poorly for the president. this is it. what it looks like to america is what it is. poor management and poor planning. i mean, it would never be okay for a company to say on the verge of the holidays, we re not sure if we re going to be able to keep operating. but it s also a campaign promise that very few republicans even support. texas republicans, border state republicans are going, nope. a wall won t work for us. you raise add critical point i peel people aren t focusing enough on. it wasn t a building a wall. it was we re bidding a wall and mexico s paying for it. when you hear trump white house staff asked that question they keep saying, we re going to build a wall. we re going to build a wall and think americans are going to forget. i don t think americans are going to forget that mexico was supposed to pay for it when some of their neighbors aren t going
among republican leadership about a possible solution to this, but senates broke after their 5:00 monday night meeting with no big plan. essentially as you heard from senate kennedy there, hearing the same from other senators, folks are waiting on the white house. they see this very much as the president s fight. the president largely stands alone in his vigor for this wall. republicans would like to see border security, money increased. democrats offered that in the compromise spending bills worked out here, but the language around the wall continues to be the bugaboo for president trump and not so much for republican members of the house and senate who want to go home for christmas, who want to keep the government open and their constituents getting paid. right now it s essentially a waiting game here with not much time left to go. i guess the thing i don t understand is, president trump is saying he wants to keep a campaign promise, but i don t think he remembers the full sentence
republicans appear to be waiting on the president, who, remember, proudly claimed that this shut down would be his own and said it just one week ago to nancy pelosi. what i ll say, yes. if we don t get what we want, one way or the other, whether it s through you, through military, through anything you want to call, i will shut down the government. okay. fair enough. we disagree. we disagree. i ll tell you what, i am proud to shut down the government for border security, chuck. that s going to be somebody s campaign ad. msnbc s garrett haake is live on the hill with more. walk me through what is going on behind the scenes. it makes no sense to me why republicans would be kept in the dark and i want you to also clarify for us really quickly the president loves to say, i want a wall. you want open borders. this is not about a wall versus open borders. nancy pelosi and chuck schumer clearly articulated last week that they support respecting the laws on our borders and want to have
believing that this is the right thing to do, should democrats be paying attention to that? you know, it s a curious statement that the president made. what does that mean exactly ask their job, do what they re told to do as border patrol people. to stand with him, i m not exactly sure what the president was alluding to. look, i understand in a way what the president is saying, though, because more money for border patrol means more border patrol agents. so it could just merely be a bread and butter statement by the union president. you could give more money to border patrol and not waste it on a wall. that s what the democrats are talking about. i think we have to remember that president trump doesn t pay attention to any polls 1ke s ex the ones in his own head. he believes that s a critical issue that got him elected and keeps him, in his mind, popular. i believe that he believes the so-called caravan is what prevented more democratic victories on election day.
occurring the market down in a significant way has a lot of people worried. next, days ewa you from a government shutdown. you wouldn t know if from what seems to be a lack of negotiations between the white house and democrats. a shutdown before christmas. is it inevitable? makes no sense to me. all of this happening over a wall that was supposed to get paid for my mexico. before we go, apparently trump watched saturday night live this weekend and was not happy. suggesting that maybe they are guilty of collusion. stephen colbert took this as proof why the president should never be a critic. mr. president, you might not like saturday night live, but that s not a crime. what are donald trump s yelp reviews like. the service was slow and the food too salty. murder. rder? well, it s a good thing we don t have to worry about homeowners insurance. geico can help with that.
