this is a film about storytelling. about how we tell the story of our country s past. why do we want to believe one version and not another? maybe because it makes us feel safe at night. there is one episode of america s history that is told very differently depending on who you are and where you live. it is the story of our civil war and what came after. the winds of war blew across the land, made of it a country divided. friend turned into foe. brother fought against brother. it was such a long and drawn-out struggle, and the feeling on both sides was so intense. we re all just romantics, lost in contemporary times, you might say. every one of us feels we was born 125 years too late. to introduce myself, my name is rachel boynton. this is nelson walker. hi. we are independent documentary filmmakers. we re making a film about how we tell the story of the civil war. we re filming in lots of different schools, and we re going places with a deep connection to this
closer to 400. 50 of them died. the basis of our meeting tonight, we call it reconstruction, what went right and what went wrong. holy mackerel. hello, hello. what a crowd. we re going to talk about reconstruction, the physical period of time from 1865 to 1877, you know. in the school system we came to reconstruction and the chapter ended on the civil war. how are you going to rebuild this part of the country with malice towards none as lincoln s words, how are you going to do that? no one on the civilian side on the confederate presidency was ever forced to concede and repudiate what they believed. and we allowed a group of people that waged an insurrection against our government to build statues to their heroes. so that has kept it alive.
a swing of 25 points toward trump, that s the new analysis of the election results. do you think this is the beginning of the reforming of the republican party started by your policies? it is a game changer, in texas, the border state, the biggest vote since they call it reconstruction, that means the civil war, the biggest numbers since the civil war and very proud of it. hispanics, they are ambitious, they want security and safety, they understood the border better than anybody and they are very entrepreneurial, they don t want to see what is happening and they don t want socialism and i would say better than anybody, flocking, i want to take full credit for it and think i will, flocking to us and i saw that in my area of queens they are flocking in numbers nobody has seen before but i tell you they are incredible people and they are coming to the republican party.
