deficit climb we had from the bush administration into the obama administration? but look where it is today. the affordable care act has reformed it and made it work. it was enormously expensive. it didn t work but we ve made it work. on this issue of the deficit, mixing apples and oranges we have a $4 trillion economy. and the united states is not broke.of course, we need to deal with this. the act is paid for. the republicans during the shutdown wanted to undermine the pay for by dismantling the medical device issue because they don t want to ethis legislation pass. they want to see it fail, not pass, you can seed. there are millions of americans that will get health care. the president did not misrepresent. you will keep your health insurance. and you ll have the ability to get a more refined, a more updated, a more current and more expansive for you and your family. i m here to save lives, not here to frighten people. i know the stories and i know
amendment to our constitution, i realize he doesn t get a vote on it. if he says i won t negotiate with you, he s saying i never want to see the federal government compelled to live within its means. try and answer this for me because i asked this to a couple people and haven t quite got an answer i can understand. republicans are saying there is no point in bringing this up for a clean c.r., for a vote on this in the house, that it wouldn t pass. democrats are continuing to call for that or bring it up for a vote, bring it up for a vote. it will pass. there are republicans that would support as well as, obviously, a lot of democrats. why not, from your standpoint, why not, if you feel confident that it would not pass, why not bring it up for a vote, for a clean vote, and let it fail, and that way you take away that strategic argument from the democrats? i wouldn t argue that a c.r., as they describe it is clean and i don t think it s clean at all that it wouldn t pass.
manu, i want to talk about the background check bill which was filibustered to death yesterday. i want to ask you why did it fail, but first i want to run through five of the many theories that we hear running around on why it failed. the president says it s the fear of the nra. some are saying it is, as senator manchin just talked about, senators are being asked to choose between immigration and guns. some are pointing out this is a party line vote except for these eight people. that s a different story, but let ee see if we can show the eight senators who vote, the democrats who voted no, most of them rural, the republicans who voted yes. but beyond that, it s pretty much a party line vote and joe scarborough this morning says the party is moving toward extinction, angry that they didn t gogo for more support for it. there s also this lack of filibuster reform. there was an interesting thing
happening alisyn: because of stimulus? no, they were propping up bad companies. alisyn: bailouts. in this country we ve got banks that are going bust not because of bad account, we ve got crazy accounting policies where i m as tall as charles. [laughter] i d like to be, but i m not. and also we ve got bailouts of companies that didn t need bailing out, they just needed to go true the bankruptcy process which is completely normal. this is america, you re allowed to fail. you can start again. but if you don t let it fail, it s bad for everybody else. alisyn: but to charles point, i don t think this is a democrat or relin issue. you have private economists like paul krugman saying that this recovery is not happening fast enough because the stimulus wasn t big enough. there s differences as to why the economy s not recovering, but it s not fair to say that everybody s writing a rosy picture of what s going on right now. well, krugman wants more of the stuff thatçui simon
