case. joining me now from chicago, the man you want to talk to when you talk chicago politics, rick pearson, political reporter foretfor the chicago tribune. do you think emanuel will survive it? i don t think anybody in chicago truly expects the mayor is going to resign. everybody knows rahm emanuel. we re also talking about emanuel knowing that he s got 3 1/2 years left in his term. he knows that oftentimes politics can be short attention span theater. but certainly he s been embarrassed in ways that i m sure he could not imagine, the fact of having that department of justice investigation providing a critical hammer for these badly needed reforms in the chicago police department. what s interesting for me, susan, you know, like for example in the ferguson case, one of the things that we heard frequently was you need more black political representation in ferguson, you need more
case? you know if the city s lawyers knew, then clearly the state attorney knew the same thing. that s right. alderman, back to you on this. i guess it is in part looking given how old and how broad these sets of problems are, knowing now that attorney general lynch is coming. right? that the doj is coming to do this work and what we ve seen in baltimore, ferguson and other cities, do you have a sense of hope in this space or is it kind of broken in a way that can t be repaired? i think it is time now for the public to raise that outcry. they ve been doing so every single day. there has not been a day since the laquan mcdonald video came out that there has not been a protest. chicago isn t ferguson. we have black political leadership. we have latino political leadership. rahm emanuel was elected because of black votes. so now is the time for the public to come forward and demand that change. i was elected to be part of that change so i m asking for the city kwounl to reform the w
brought the charges up quickly to line up with the video being released because they feared such a reaction. what s the back story here? the fear that a lot of people had and i spent a lot of time back and forth with our chicago chapter. they were in chicago. the fear last year when the case first came up is that they were stalling past the election. i think a lot of people were wondering, why did they wait. an officer shoots a young man 16 times. forensics shows this. this isn t ferguson.
are now, when you and i were there, we were talking to a bunch of different people who were sort of laying out what the picture of that place is like. and a lot of people, their first line was, this isn t ferguson this isn t ferguson, which seems to be true both literally and also in terms of the level of tension there is. but a lot of people i know that you were talking to, were talking about parts of north charleston that are predominantly african-american, where folks feel like their profile doesn t matter of course. that s right. so the same issues that were reflected in the department of justice report out of ferguson, disproportionate stops of black folks, wide and long complaints from some community members saying they were targeted and harassed by the police. you re hearing the same things here. so why this isn t ferguson one in that the police officer michael slager was charged with murder, and he s locked up right now in the county jail. so the system seems to be working. b
thinks that mr. cosby, being a comedian, is not enough so he wants to tell jokes as well. look it is unfortunate at this particular point in mr. cosby s career that mr. giuliani would point to him as an example of what must be done but number two, where have you been? obama has been on this bill cosby-like podium from the very beginning. when his speech before the church in chicago, where he told black men to step up to the plate. at morehouse college, at the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the march on washington. i happened to disagree with these particular interventions but the point is that they have made and in the very similar position, similar position that rudy giuliani has adopted and bill cosby asserted mr. obama, president obama did the same thing. i think he s been sleeping on it. zerlina, isn t ferguson missouri, now trying to develop a new model? i mean with what has unfolded in that community, the national attention that it s gotten the
