not see the traditional statements from the police union rallying behind the officers. from one perspective, you can look at the situation as a litmus test. we are looking at one of the first major national pieces that we have seen in many years where there are all black officers. this isn t a situation where traditional questions of black versus white. we are looking at police violence being on trial as police of violence itself. not solely a racial issue in terms of racial conflict, but in terms of the power that police have under the current legal structure, whether some of those major supreme court cases go to the cv gardner. some of these cases and allow police to have what the disability to feel like they can use deadly force in all of these different situations. even in the context where the police department procedures might not seem to call for it, there is a separate question
and we should expect more of that. and you might interpret that as the sort of dead air of that moment, is allowing this to play out. at the same time, the president was in his event about ukraine, very different topic, so we really only had one fullsome statement from the president a week ago in california, he made a brief comment prior to that about his own case of the documents, so the president has not spoken about the mike pence situation. it may be a case of, in terms of his own political instincts, to simply let it be out there, let s see what happens, that kind of thing. from the white house podium, we ve seen his press secretary also defer to the department of justice, and to the white house counsel s office. so this isn t a situation where perhaps more is helpful to the biden white house, because there is this sense that you have other lawmakers and elected officials talking about, as garrett pointed out, maybe it s not so much about the custodian
political culture. we are becoming a country where people resort to political, to violence to settle political disputes. that is not, you know, we ve had on the margins political groups that have engaged in violence in our history but this is a new thing in the modern era. it is a time that our law enforcement and intelligence entities really need to rethink how they are assessing the current state of threats, internal, domestic threats to this country and where those threats are coming from. this is a different place than the domestic terrorism environment that we thought about and that we tried to mitigate, you know, certainly when i was in the fbi over the course of my career. what would that look like? what can the branches of law enforcement do to respond not just after the fact but try to prevent these things from happening? well, this isn t a situation that the fbi or any law
this isn t a situation in the fbi or any law enforcement entity can completely solve. from their perspective, there are some things they can do. the first thing is they need to really rethink how they assess and consider the threats. years ago, there was a time in this country when we posed a threat from environmental rights groups and animal rights extremists. that has passed. those groups have really receded. these domestic threats are constantly changing. it s time for the fbi to think about where the threat is actually coming from, domestically, in this country right now. i think they missed the ball in
