ERBIL â The recently announced lockdown to curb the spread of COVID-19 will not affect the scheduled visit of Pope Francis to Iraq, an official said.
Iraq on Thursday imposed a two-week partial lockdown across the country, except the Kurdistan Region, after warnings of a new spike in the virus infections.
Speaking to the official Iraqi News Agency, Ismail al-Hadidi, an adviser to the Iraqi president said the papal visit will not be postponed due to the restrictions.
âMeasures to welcome the pontiff are underway as planned,â al-Hadidi emphasized.
The lockdown is set to end on 4th March, a day after the arrival of Pope Francis for a three-day visit.
