Photo: Shutterstock. Potholes have become the bane of Long Islanders after a particularly dreadful winter full of storms and freezing weather. Frustrated motorists lining medians and shoulders with blown tires have become a frequent sight on our roadways. To help mitigate the problem, the Town of Islip has opened a new hotline where drivers can call in the location of potholes to be repaired. In a public service announcement Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter explained that potholes are caused by the expansion and contraction of ground water under the pavement. When the water freezes, it expands causing potholes. Carpenter says that while there is not much that can be done to prevent potholes, with the public’s assistance, roads can be back in shape in time for Spring.
