SOLOMONS HOST TURTLE CONSERVATION MEETING Submitted by admin on Thu, 02/23/2006 - 00:00 HONIARA, Solomon Islands (SIBC, Feb. 22) – Government delegations from Papua New Guinea and Indonesia are in Solomon Islands this week to consider a tri-national agreement on the conservation and management of critically endangered leatherback turtles. This follows the first preparatory committee meeting in Port Moresby in October last year when an Expression of Commitment was first announced. The World Wide Fund for Nature office in Honiara says representatives from the three governments; non-government organizations, regional organizations and community-based groups are meeting to discuss the status of the agreement. They will also develop implementation framework to support the agreement when it is finalized.

School teacher Ralph Suta told Radio Hapi Lagun that after the funds have been given to each constituency, victims in the Gizo/Kolombangara have yet to receive any form of assistance. He says many are still living in tents and want to be assisted as soon as possible.

SOLOMONS SOAP FACTORY HURT BY CHEAPER IMPORTS Submitted by admin on Fri, 05/14/2004 - 00:00 HONIARA, Solomon Islands (SIBC, May 13) - Solomon Soaps Ltd. is laying off workers and scaling down its operations because of lower-priced imported products. Malaita businessman Peter Rikia has asked the government to help subsidize the soap factory, which has been a source of income for coconut oil farmers on Malaita. The soap company says it is scaling down operations and reducing its labor force because of an the influx of similar products from overseas which are selling at much cheaper prices. It says most of the products are imported into the country under the Melanesian Spearhead Group trade agreement.

SOLOMONS DELEGATES IN JAPAN FOR EXPO Submitted by admin on Thu, 03/24/2005 - 00:00 NAGOYA, Japan (SIBC, Mar. 23) – The Solomon Islands delegation to the opening of the 2005 World Expo in Japan arrived this morning in Nagoya - the host of the Expo. The delegation is headed by the Minister of Commerce, Employment and Industries, Walton Naezon, and includes several senior officials from the Trade Division, the Investment Division and the Solomon Islands Expo Committee. The 2005 World Expo will see about 120 countries from around the world take part, including 12 from the Pacific Islands Region. Solomon Islands has a booth within the Pacific Pavillion. Three staff, from both the Solomon Islands Visitors Bureau and the Trade Division had arrived ahead of the opening ceremony to set up displays within the Solomon Islands booth.
