All the recent rainfall has been welcome news for many of us worried about drought-like conditions (and even high fire danger) for the first half of June. But it’s been too much for some farmers.
9&10 stopped at the Old Mission Peninsula to see the damage mother nature has done to some of this year’s cherry crop.
Phil Lyon with Island View Orchards says, “This past week we had way too much rain, way too fast. That worked for everybody, but for us.” At Island View Orchards on the Old Mission Peninsula in Grand Traverse County, a good downpour isn’t necessarily a good thing. Lyon says, “The cherries, when we get this close to harvest time, too much rain is too big of a problem. First thing Saturday morning we came out and they were all starting to split.”
