Well, this morning, cleanup continues across the southeastern United States in the wake of Hurricane Irma, the president and first lady are expected to travel to florida tomorrow to see some of the damage first hand. At least 54 deaths have now been blamed on irma. 12 of those in florida alone. In the watered florida keys, fema officials estimate at least 1 in 4 homes have been destroyed by the storm. In jacksonville, it could take a week for floodwaters to recede in some places. The local Sheriffs Office says their department has rescued more than 350 people. Despite the destruction in some places, life is returning to normal. In miami, for example, the curfew has been lifted and flights from there to ft. Lauderdale are beginning to resume but in broward county, school wont begin for at least another week. Imagine. The destruction of homes, many people right now are homeless and desperate for food and water. When it comes to the florida keys getting the first looks there today, 1 in 4 homes completely destroyed tonight. Fema telling cnn, and i quote them, basically every house was impacted in some way. Now, we showed you some of the first images from the islands as they came in. And they have been coming in through the day. Entire neighborhoods flattened. Trailer after trailer picked up and tossed. We still dont know if there were any people inside those homes at the time of irma. So far, Officials Say eight people have died as a result of the hurricane that they know of. They are going door to door. And moments ago, when you thing about the situation, we learned nearly 5 million homes still have no power. And that as temperatures are hovering near 90 degrees. Food is spoiling. Water may be contaminated. Its hard to get any supplies in. It could be more than a week before the power comes
Of the smaller keys in the lower keys and man has since continued to move north. It has been doing north, northwest, but now the storm is headed to north at nine miles an hour, which leaves southwest florida in its target. The winds and rains have increased in miami beach. The storm surge is a real concern. Southwest florida, naples is a particular concern for the National Hurricane center and Steve Harrigan is live. Theyve warned western Collier County could get extreme wind of 150 miles an hour. We are not quite there yet, but we are starting to feel it. Weve had Tropical Storms under 74, but now its starting to pick up. We are seeing small objects begin to fly around. Branches, palm trees chemistry shines are shaking. This is cnn breaking news. All right. Good morning, everyone. Top of the hour. Im poppy harlow in new york. Im john berman in miami. In just the last few minutes all around me, these streets have begun to be cleared off there in the distance you can see that yellow utility truck, such a welcome sight here in this city. But moving trees and getting power lines operational not going to be nearly enough in the florida keys. That is a scene of devastation right now. Femas just told us that their initial estimates are that 25 , 25 of the homes, are destroyed. Twothirds of the homes are badly damaged. Our chris cuomo who has been on the ground there tells us he thinks those estimates might be low. No power, no food, no drinkable water.
