Heaps of garbage are a common sight along the streets in most areas of the provincial capital where more than 15000 tonnes of litter has accumulated during the past week.
The Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) appears to be struggling to bring the garbage collection and disposal system back on track after the reopening of the roads following blockade due to protests. Meanwhile, the citizens in the affected areas are complaining of stench and health risks from the rotting garbage.
Pink bollworm causes loss of 1m cotton bales annually

FAISALABAD: Farmers should adopt proper management strategy against pink bollworm as the insect causes a loss of more than 1 million cotton bales every year.
This was stated by Deputy Director Agriculture (Extension) Chaudhry Khalid Mehmood while addressing an agriculture seminar at Jaranwala. He said that the Agriculture Department had started creating awareness among farmers about attack of pink bollworm on the cotton crop. He said the pink bollworm goes into winter nap during November and December and its eggs remain present on cotton seeds, branches and dried leafs in farms and ginning factories. When they get sufficient temperature after winter, they again become active, he told. He said that cotton growers should act upon the advice of agricultural experts and avoid cultivating cotton crop before April 1 to save it from attack of pink bollworm. Interestingly, these localities have roads and streets leading to the Minar-i-Pakistan lawns (now the Greater Iqbal Park) where the opposition alliance the Pakitan Democratic Movement (PDM) public meeting was scheduled for Dec 13.
