a nato ally. arthel: what happens to the kurds, who did most of the fighting in the u.s. led fight against isis in. well, what happens to them now is they re engaged in a fight for self preservation. they re not engaged with defeating isis, they re not engaged with securing prisoners like they were. they re trying to decide do they go south in syria, do they align themselves with the syrians and russians to stay away from the turks or do they try to get into iraq and align with those forces. arthel: what about our troops in syria, about 1,000 of them. they ve been pulled from the northern sectors and have been pulled to the south and have evacuated the bases that are there. i m told the russians have moved into those bases. arthel: our soldiers, they re okay, they re going to be okay? it was a bit of a challenge. arthel: i m sorry, sir. it was a bit of a challenge, because predominantly special operations forces operating in small detachments, we had to bring them all together,
you asking if we re going to have a read out. yes. sorry. we re continuing in the nafta negotiation. we feel like we ve made significant progress and keep you posted as that continues. [ inaudible ] it is important for the united states to stay in syria. the president has maintained all along that our focus has been on defeating isis. they re we ve made significant progress since the president took office. and under his leadership with a complete collapse of the caliphate there. we re continuing to make progress and work with our allies and partners in the region but we want to focus on transitioning to local enforcem and do that over this process to make sure that there is no re-emergence of isis in and take way some of the progress that we ve made and so that is what we re moving to. as the environment has changed because of the success under the president s leadership.
night there. my pleasure. nice to be with you. i was talking a few minutes ago basically what i learned from you and your reporting at the the new york times about what to watch for in isis claims of responsibility. before we got word of this second attack possibly or at least this second police action tonight which appears to have left four people dead and another person seriously injured at the hands of police, we did get what appears to be a claim of responsibility from isis. we did. am i right that that s unusual? how do you view that ? it is unusual if we assume that the two people in custody right now are the perpetrators of this attack. i don t know if they are the actual actors of the attack. but you are right. isis in general does not claim attacks when their assailants are still at large specifically because, as we assume, they are not trying to create a case against them and make it easier for police to put them away. in terms of what we know
now as you said, president hollande goes on to meet with angela merkel of germany. that occurs today. then he goes to a meeting with vladimir putin of russia again to talk once more about that coalition. one big question, of course, is the issue of a regime change in syria. president obama has said bashar al assad has to go but russia has been accused of propping him up. so, we will just have to see how that goes. there will be another opportunity for president obama to sit down and talk once again with the french president. that will occur at a climate conference this weekend. president obama goes on sunday to paris. back to you, chris. obvious, joe, looking the it around the edges, the question where is this critical mass of momentum they need in this war against isis in thank you for the reporting. so, big provocative question that s kind of driving the 2016 race for president is county s
