There are quite a number of new East Coast café openings, that we decided to dedicate one just to Siglap.
The present area of Siglap was founded by Tok Lasam. He sailed to Singapore to escape the Dutch in the 1660s (irony that there is a famous Dutch Colony café around here now). Accordingly, dark thunder clouds appeared in the area which led to the name
“Si-Gelap” – derived from the Malay word
‘gelap’ meaning “darkness that conceals”.
