Next, an interview with ishmael beah from book of america on his book on the radiance of tomorrow. This is about 15 minutes. On your screen is ishmael beah, author of a long way gone. The second book is coming out, mr. Beah. Why did you choose to make it a novel . First of all, i wanted to depart from the memoirs and nonfiction. Second, the issues i read about in the new book, radiance of tomorrow, its about a lot of people. Experiences going home after war another people six euros, so it is composite of the tanks. I want to have the freedom to play around with words and images. What kind of freedom is writing a novel gave you rather than nonfiction . With the novel, for me particularly theres room to play with language more than to actually maybe extend the recurrence is. You know, expand them more and traumatize them a little more. They were also in the same time. The runaway coming to us whatever they wanted they wanted to do was this novel i talk about things that existed before th
In that case, i carry that withn me, and the way i carry myself, my mannerism, everything, would always be with me. And everywhere i go, when i speak people say where you from . And i will joke and say, new york, no, no, where are you really from . And i would laugh. Im a from sierra leone with some american tendencies. [laughter] always will remain that way. One more question. Yes. Hi. I was just wondering if you could if you could catch us up from the end of a long way gone to now just with your personal life, you know . Where do you spend most of your time, do you have a family, you know, that kind of thing. A long way gone, the memoir, you know, ends when im still in guinea which is the next door country to sierraly eurozone in the capital city sierra leone. When that book ended, i went to capetown, south africa. Stayed in many legally. I remember some instances i was leaving and they would say to me at the airport, we know youre here physically, but theres no proof how you got int
There are still crazy people and to follow crazy people. We have had demagogues route history but what i have heard from other people is when minutes in is discussed they compare him to hitler. They said, baysed on your interaction with him, are you surprised Charles Manson did what he did . And dr. Smith said, no, im not surprised Charles Manson led people to these terrible acts. Im surprised there are so many a potential charl Charles Mansons who are still around. Its going to happen and keep happening, but if we can just demystify these people, and if my book accomplishes nothing else, i hope it is demystification, he is going to be with us but let it by the truth about him rather than the selfserving legends he has put out there.
