PROVO BYU head coach Kalani Sitake just wanted to play football. And after the Cougars scheduled 11 games in the midst of a global pandemic at one time being the only team west of El Paso to play college football his players felt the same way.
So when news broke of the No. 14 Cougars (No. 18 in College Football Playoff rankings) earning a bowl berth to play UCF next Tuesday in the Boca Raton Bowl (5 p.m. MST, ESPN), there wasn t consternation or any hemming or hawing from Provo.

PROVO It may be a week later than some expected, but after the first upset loss of the season, BYU wrapped up its first 10-win season in nearly a decade.
Zach Wilson threw for 310 yards and three touchdowns, two of them to his favorite red-zone target Isaac Rex, and the Cougars overturned an early deficit to run away with its 10th win over the season, 28-14, over San Diego State on senior night Saturday at LaVell Edwards Stadium.
Dax Milne caught seven passes for 87 yards and a touchdown, and Neil Pau u added a career-high 117 yards. Lopini Katoa added 137 all-purpose yards for the Cougars (10-1), who clinched a 10-win season for the first time since 2011.
He remembers taking a seat in a chair opposite his coach.
But he doesn t remember much after that: just tears, hugging and a lot of emotions.
This week, Griffitts, a senior tight end and fullback, was finally rewarded with a scholarship from the BYU football program. In most years, such an announcement would ve been made in front of the team, after practice or a game, and the 100-plus members of the Cougars would jump and hoot and holler as they smothered Griffitts.
This year, there was none of that, largely because of COVID-19 precautions and social distancing measures designed to keep players and coaches apart as much as possible.
