The new year usually brings a boost in gym membership as people make their annual resolution to get fit. But 2021 will likely be an exception.
Saturday, the state implemented a 25% capacity limit in most indoor businesses, a significant drop from the previous 40% limit. Gym owners in Central Massachusetts have been adapting to state regulations since reopening in July, but with physical spacing limitations and staff cuts, some gyms have taken the changes harder than others.
Before the pandemic, Worcester Fitness was a busy 30,000-square-foot gym with full workout rooms, popular fitness classes, a kids’ room, steam room and a pool. Now, available equipment is reduced, classes each have fewer than 10 participants, the children’s room and steam room are closed, and the pool requires a reservation.
