Senate Statement - Anniversary of Beirut Port Explosion on 4 August 2020

Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Mr President, when Australians first heard of the explosion at the port of Beirut, it was an incomprehensible disaster. The mobile phone videos of the sudden explosion, with its massive white shock wave, were truly horrifying. The detonation was so large that it registered on the global detection network of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty Organisation. More than 215 people died, more than 7,000 were injured, and more than 300,000 were displaced because their homes were lost. Lebanon has not recovered from its grief, nor from its damage. That day also took the life of an Australian citizen: two-year old Isaac Oehlers. Today we remember Isaac, and we once more offer our deep and sincere condolences to his parents Sarah and Craig, and their families, in their immeasurable grief.

Beirut blast: Families of victims fight for justice

After the massive explosion at Beirut s port a year ago, only a small part of Ibrahim Hoteit s younger brother was identified: his scalp. Mr Hoteit buried his brother — a large man, a firefighter, a martial arts champion — in a container the size of a shoebox. Since then, Mr Hoteit has sold his business, a perfume and accessories shop. He sleeps only a few hours a night. Black circles ring his eyes. READ MORE: Ibrahim Hoteit, 51, left, and his wife, Hanan, lead a protest for the relatives of victims of the Beirut port explosion. Beirut, Lebanon – August 4, 2020, began as a mundane morning for Samer Tibati, a Syrian worker from Lattakia, living in the semi-industrial Karantina neighbourhood near the Beirut port. “My daughter Bissan came up to me, told me she loved me, and asked me for some money,” Tibati told Al Jazeera. “She then bought chocolate and gave it to everyone living on our street.” Later that day, the devastating Beirut port explosion tore through the neighbourhood, badly wounding the seven-year-old girl. He ran to her, cradled her in his arms, and tried to find someone to take them to a hospital. Tibati hopped on the back of a motorcycle driver who offered them a ride. It took hours until they found a hospital that had room for Bissan.
