in the last few weeks and we know from those that have been hiding inside, holed up inside the steel plant, that they were running out of water, they were running out of food. and their situation was getting incredibly dire. but we know they now have been evacuated. what we don t know at this stage, what is not clear is what will happen to the soldiers that are still inside, about 600 or so soldiers, many of them wounded. or whether they will be evacuated. when i spoke to a government official last week, he said that the soldiers weren t part of this evacuation plan, kim, that had been set up between the u.n. and red cross and russia. but we heard from president zelenskyy yesterday where he said he s working on diplomatic options to get everyone evacuated from azovstal and of course from the city of mariupol itself. isa soares in lviv, thank you
civilians, how many are children. as you can see there, they were being evacuated with the help of the u.n., with the help of the red cross, and we know they re supposed to be making their way to ukrainian held territory of zaporizhzhia. it s worrying, given what we have seen in the last three days, the intensity of the air strikes and the intensity of the shelling on the besieged city of mariupol and in particular of the steel plant where there are still civilians inside, 100 civilians, we ve been told as well as 600 soldiers. i spoke to a deputy mayor of lviv earlier this week and i asked them whether they, the soldiers were part of this evacuation plan. he told me they weren t. clearly a huge concern. that s why we ve had president zelenskyy calling, pleading really for a way to get them out. have a listen.

i m isa soares coming to you from lviv, ukraine. we are awaiting word on whether russia has made good on its latest pledge to allow civilians to evacuate from the siege at the azovstal steel plant in mariupol. humanitarian corridors announced by moscow are supposed to be open right now. we have yet to hear anything on this from ukrainian officials. those that have made it out, leaving their homes as well as families behind, are calling themselves lucky. that is the case with hundreds of ukrainians who were allowed to leave the city of kherson after weeks of living under russian occupation. nick paton walsh talked with some of them as they finally tasted freedom again. reporter: their road to salvation here is a dusty track. where few know the route and just follow the car in front. above the trees, the dust likely
