Mirwaiz was kept under house arrest for more than four years to prevent him from leading protests against the 2019 scrapping of the special status to Jammu and Kashmir. Although he was released in September, he had since occasionally been put under house detention as the Gaza war broke out
Mirwaiz, who is the Valley’s chief cleric, was put under house arrest on August 4, 2019, a day before the Centre abrogated Jammu and Kashmir’s special status.
The Anjuman in a statement said Mirwaiz was not allowed to carry out his official religious responsibilities and the authorities did not provide any reason for such restrictions.
