Limerick s attractiveness impacted by visa processing delays

Mum who spent ten years in Direct Provision opens her own restaurant in Sligo this week

From living in Direct provision for almost 10 years to opening a restaurant of her own in the centre of Sligo at the age of 45, has proved that believing in dreams and working hard can make it real. Funké Egberongbe travelled from Nigeria to Ireland at the age of 27, in 2005. She made the journey alone while pregnant with her second child to find a better life. She lived in Direct Provision for almost 10 years, and was being moved from one place to another throughout that time including at Globe House in Sligo. Living in Direct Provision was not easy, especially for a pregnant woman by herself. But her 18 years of struggles have now paid off, and she is ready to open her own restaurant, ‘FUNKÉ’ on Grattan Street, Sligo. Through this Afro-Caribbean restaurant she wants to bring the flavours and cultural tapestry of African diaspora to Sligo. It is the dream that kept her going through her difficult times and the heritage that she carried with her when she came to Ireland.
