Christmas is a special time for many Irish people. It is a time of coming together, of celebrating family and friendship. But Christmas 2020 will be a Christmas like no other, because this year many of us must remain apart to stay safe. But this doesn’t mean we don’t miss seeing our friends and neighbours, and the wonderful Irish community in and around Boston.
A quote from Article 2 of Bunreacht na hÉireann, the Irish Constitution, is printed in every Irish passport. It says “the Irish nation cherishes its special affinity with people of Irish ancestry living abroad who share its cultural identity and heritage”. This gives some indication of the continuing importance of the global Irish diaspora to Ireland today. This Christmas, the Department of Foreign Affairs, and Minister for the Diaspora Colm Brophy T.D. launched “To Be Irish At Christmas”, a program aimed at bringing together the global Irish diaspora during this extraordinary year.
