The Easter Rising was an armed rebellion which took place in Ireland during Easter week, 1916. The aim of The Rising was to gain Irish Independence from Britain. The Rising began on April 24th 1916, lasting six days. After surrendering, Irish leaders Padraig Pearse and James Connolly along with thirteen others were executed after by the British. Their executions outraged many of the Irish public who originally didn t back the rebel s actions. Although The Rising failed from a military point of view, it would ultimately lead to the formation of the Irish Free State in 1922, and eventually the Republic of Ireland in 1949.
