We begin with a developing story out of costa rica where 12 people, 10 of them american tourists, were killed in a plane crash. The single engine charter plane went down in a wooded area shortly after takeoff. Among the americans on board, a family of five from suburban new york, identified as bruce and Irene Steinberg and their three sons. Horrified vacationers saw the plane go down and rushed to the wreckage to try to help. My family and i were having lunch and we heard the plane coming overhead pretty low, so we all left the table to go see the plane pass overhead with our kids. And as it flew over the top of us, it made a really hard lefthand turn and was totally sideways and then nose dived straight into the ground and there was an explosion. A florida couple and their daughter were on board as well as two costa rican pilots. A man with a grudge against police shot five Police Officers killing one of them. 29yearold on the job just for seven months. Abcs Clayton Sandell has more.

In maryland more than a dozen fires, but no serious injuries. In virginia, two new years day fires, one of them with a tragic ending. Flames raced through this home in annandale, trapping a 94yearold man inside. And tonight we are learning more about the victim from neighbors who captured images of the aftermath. His name was louis, but people called him mr. Lou. Neighbors tell us he used a walker and that may be why he was trapped. There is someone inside. Mr. Lou.
