Pensioner becomes known as Crochet Lady of Tuam

When pensioner Irene Nel from Tuam wrote into various newspapers during level 5 restrictions to say that wool was now deemed non-essential, she touched a nerve in many people s hearts.
Irene suffers from chronic pain and health issues and lives on her own in an apartment in Tuam. With no family to depend on, the past few months in and out of lockdown have been difficult, but she found joy and purpose in knitting and crochet.
But as Aldi closed the middle aisle – where Irene would typically buy her wool – she felt a message was being sent about what is and isn t important, and more than that, who is and isn t important.
