Iran-backed militias turn to drone attacks, alarming U S forces in Iraq

Can Iranian drone tech shift Middle East s strategic balance of power?

IRBIL, IRAQ: The drone threat posed to US and coalition personnel by Iran-backed militias is growing, and defenses against such threats remain limited particularly in the face of Tehran’s growing capabilities. That was the clear message delivered by the US military commander in the Middle East during his most recent visit to Iraq. Marine Gen. Frank McKenzie’s warning came in the wake of a rash of drone attacks launched by Iran’s proxies and allied groups in the region against coalition positions and regional partners of the US, a development viewed by many as a sign of a shift in the strategic balance of power.

Iraq: Rocket lands near US base at Irbil airport

Irbil, Iraq: Rocket fire targeted an airport where US soldiers are based in Irbil, the capital of Iraqi Kurdistan, on Wednesday evening, Kurdish officials said. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack that caused a loud explosion audible across the city, although pro-Iranian factions were accused of carrying out a similar attack in mid-February. “It caused no casualties or damage,” Irbil governor Omed Khoshnaw told the official Iraqi news agency, after a statement by the Kurds’ official counter-terror branch flagged the rocket attack. A security cordon blocked all access to the airport, witnesses reported. The governor said air links were not interrupted.
