Authorities in Iran have detained a woman journalist, local media reported on Sunday (February 5). Elnaz Mohammadi, the detained journalist works with a reformist newspaper Hammihan. Mohammadi's sister, who is also a journalist, is already in custody after reporting on Mahsa Amini's death.
Iran has been rocked by nationwide protests after the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini who was detained by Iran's morality police for her 'improper' clothing. The protests have led to deaths and arrests and there have also been calls for downfall of the clerical regime in the country.
An Iranian man died by suicide in France's southeastern city of Lyon on Tuesday. The man took the step after announcing on social media that he was going to kill himself to ensure that the world pays attention to the reported crackdown on women protestors in Iran.
Mohammad Moradi, 38, was found in the Rhone river that flows through the centre of Lyon late on Monday, an anonymous police source was quoted as saying by the news agency AFP. The police source further told AFP that the emergency services made an immediate intervention but were unable to revive him on the river bank.
Nationwide protests, sparked by the death of 22-year-old Iranian Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini in September in the custody of morality police, have been at their most intense in the areas where the majority of Iran's 10 million Kurds live.
Some of the worst unrest has been in areas home to minority ethnic groups with long-standing grievances against the state, including Sistan-Baluchistan and Kurdish regions.
A Khamenei protege, Ebrahim Raisi was elected president in June 2021 in a tightly managed race that brought all branches of the state under hardline control after years of more pragmatic government under ex-president Hassan Rouhani.
